In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, December 4, Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka said Morocco plans to meet 60% of its drinking water needs through desalination by 2030, up from the current 25%.
Seventeen plants are already operational and four more are under construction, including one in Casablanca. Additional projects are planned, notably a large facility near Tiznit with a capacity of 350 million cubic meters and an estimated cost of 10 billion dirhams. The tender for the site is expected to be launched in mid-2026. Further installations are planned in Nador, Tangier, Rabat (in partnership with Veolia), and Tan-Tan.
The Minister added that all new plants will run on renewable energy. He also announced the deployment of floating solar panels on dams to reduce evaporation, a phenomenon that causes the loss of about 30% of surface water.
