The Ministry of National Education has unveiled its 2026 budget plan to Parliament. Among its priorities is the expansion of pioneering establishments. 2,000 primary schools and 500 middle schools will join the program, adding to the 4,626 primary and 786 middle pioneering schools already in operation. These new institutions will be renovated or fully rehabilitated.
As part of the pioneering schools program, the Ministry plans to equip around 24,000 primary classrooms and 10,000 middle school classrooms with computers, and to ensure internet access across all educational institutions.
Reducing school dropouts is another priority for the Ministry in 2026, with initiatives focusing on educational and social support, strengthening rural schooling, particularly school transportation, accommodation, and catering infrastructure, and expanding the territorial network of second-chance centers.
The ministry’s objective for the upcoming school year is as follows:
- Primary schools: Reduce the current dropout rate from 1.7% to 1%. Actions will mainly target peri-urban areas to support population mobility. More than 66 primary schools will be built, along with the planned extensions.
- Middle schools: Lower the dropout rate from 15.5% to less than 5%. To achieve this, over 76 new middle schools will be built, together with planned extensions.
- High schools: Cut the dropout rate from 12.9% to below 5%, notably through the construction of over 51 new high schools, in addition to planned extensions.
The generalization of Amazigh to all primary schools is also planned, with the launch of free digital platforms for learning Arabic, Amazigh, and foreign languages. This measure follows the existing program of generalizing the teaching of English and Amazigh languages, already underway at the primary and middle school levels.
As for the Amazigh language, it will be extended to all primary schools during the 2026-2027 school year, with the recruitment of 1,000 additional teachers. In 2025-2026, it had already been implemented in more than 50% of primary schools. English teaching will be extended to all middle school classes.
For the year 2026-2027, a total of 20,000 budgeted positions will be created by the Ministry of National Education, distributed as follows:
- 19,000 positions for recruiting teaching staff for the 2026-2027 school year. The organization of competitive exams for teacher qualification was announced a few days ago.
- 600 positions for recruiting teaching assistants.
- 344 positions for recruiting holders of the agrégation certificate.
